MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – With Thanksgiving about a week away, food is probably on the mind.
However, some may be worried about staying within nutritional goals.
MQT Nutrition Health and Nutrition Coach Lauren Spranger says indulging occasionally is okay. She explains the 80/20 rule.
“Eat well, you have a fruit, a veggie, a protein and a healthy carbohydrate,” Spranger said. “One plate of food, not two, not three, 80% of the time. Then you have your treats or your holiday dinner 20% of the time.”
In Ironwood, Aspirus Health Registered Dietitian Rachelle McPherson says it’s common for individuals to stray from their nutritional goals during the holidays. For those celebrating, she recommends having a plan.
“Offer to bring a dish to pass,” McPherson said. “If you’re not really sure what is going to be offered, making sure that you bring something like a vegetable charcuterie board or a side you know is made to fit those recommendations you’ve been following. That’s another great idea.”
Spranger acknowledges social holidays like Thanksgiving can make staying consistent difficult. She says those who stray from their goals shouldn’t beat themselves up.
“It’s really about making one decision at a time, that’s where that 80/20 rule comes back in to not give yourself a guilt trip,” Spranger said. “But to say, ‘Okay, I don’t have to be perfect all the time, in this moment what’s the next best decision?’”
Spranger and McPherson also recommend staying active during the holiday season.
