ECU Health Beaufort Hospital is taking a hands-on approach to promote healthy living by offering fresh vegetables and free health screenings at its third annual Fall Harvest Event.
At the ECU Health Community Well Being Zone, a small garden flourishes with onions, broccoli, and potatoes. However, the event is about more than just fresh produce.
“They are providing guidance and coaching for well-being and wellness habits, so lots of wonderful things going on out here to support the community,” said Tammy Thompson, ECU Health’s Director of Experience, Engagement, Education, and Design.
Attendees enjoyed a warm bowl of fresh vegetable soup, prepared by Jessica Albea, owner of Fresh Fabs. Albea said she participated in the event to “nourish bodies.”
“Well, you have to nourish to flourish,” Albea said. “What we put in our bodies on a daily basis plays a big part in our overall health.”
Cathy Karlovich, a volunteer at the hospital, expressed her enthusiasm for the annual harvest.
“I think this is really special,” Karlovich said. “Healthy eating is very important to me. I understand how eating well can impact your whole life, so doing something like this for the community, being able to share information is really important.”
In addition to the harvest, a bus was available for community members to receive free health screenings, further emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to community wellness.
