The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) recently appointed Andrea Moon as the new director of its Windgate Art School. Moon, a contemporary ceramic artist, sculptor and educator, brings more than 27 years of experience to the role. She previously served as a lecturer at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University and as director of education at Craft Alliance, both in St. Louis.
“Andrea’s expansive experience as an educator and ceramic artist, and her passion for creating an accessible space for the community to create together, makes her a perfect fit here at the Museum,” said Dr. Victoria Ramirez, AMFA’s executive director. “With her leadership, AMFA’s Windgate Art School will undoubtedly grow and embrace the creative spirit of our local community.”
AMFA’s Windgate Art School offers instruction in drawing, painting, ceramics, glass, metals, woodworking and printmaking, with courses available for all ages and skill levels. The school operates with over 70 practicing artist instructors, providing daytime and evening classes quarterly, as well as specialty workshops.
As director, Moon will oversee educational programming, strategic planning and the development of a dynamic learning environment for students and emerging artists. Her leadership will position AMFA as a leading institution for visual and performing arts education.
“I believe in building relationships and helping others realize their potential through the education of craft and art,” said Moon. “It is with great excitement that I join the team at the Windgate Art School and look forward to interacting with its incredible students.”
Throughout her career, Moon has held leadership roles in the arts, including residency and communications coordinator at the Red Lodge Clay Center in Montana and director of the International Artist Residency at The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China.
She holds a bachelor of fine arts in 3D studies from Bowling Green State University and a master of fine arts in ceramics and sculpture from Texas Tech University. Moon also completed graduate studies in ceramics at the University of South Carolina and a post-baccalaureate program in ceramics at the University of Illinois, Urbana–Champaign.
Registration for AMFA’s Windgate Art School winter term is now open for adult and youth classes. Spring registration begins at noon on March 6, with early access for AMFA Circle Society and Corporate Partners starting March 4. Under the Reduced Tuition Program, supported by Michael Laughter, multi-week classes are available at an average 17% discount.
