April 17 Arts and Entertainment Source: Benicia embraces the art of spring

First Street Arts, formerly HQ Gallery, provides space for a variety of art forms, from oil paintings to photography. The current show, “Primaveral Bloom” brings together the abstract work of Ebba Navas and the photography of Dan Suzio.

“Primaveral Bloom” focuses on this idea of spring, in Navas’ work as well as Dan Suzio’s nature photography, which depicts animals and their young.

Suzio and Navas’ work was not paired together for any particular artistic reason. “I don’t want it to seem like we did that on purpose,” she laughs. “We draw names out of a hat.” Additionally, despite the spring theme, artists can enter whatever work they like, says Navas.

But in the end, the art just seemed to work out well together. “It’s just spring, and so it’s our natural inclination to do that,” she says.

Navas has always had a great love of art, she says. “I grew up with beautiful paintings all around me.” Her grandmother was an artist and it’s where she got her name. Now her grandkids are following the same path. “I think it’s genetic,” she laughs.

For about six years Navas has been with First Street Arts in downtown Benicia. “It’s a really cool little gallery,” she says.

Lately, she’s been creating abstract art, working with a lot of pinks, greens and pastels. “It’a a lot to do with Mother Nature coming out of her slumber for the winter and just awakening with all the beautiful colors of spring,” she says.

Two of the lives in “Primaveral Bloom” display her recent abstract collage work.

The duo, titled “Lacy Morning” and “Lacy Afternoon” are aptly named for their color palettes (the morning is bluer and cool, while the afternoon is a warm pink and purple), but they also were made using actual lace.

At this Saturday’s reception, Navas will be available to answer questions about the art as they enjoy drinks and music. She enjoys the opportunity to talk with guests, she says.

“Most of my sales are either Facebook or Instagram or at fairs. So, I love talking about myself,” she says, laughing. “It’s about my artwork really, but you know, it’s really bearing your soul. I mean, this is who I am.”

As of now, Navas is hard at work preparing for a summer of art fairies, she says. Her work is currently divided into two sections, abstract and abstract landscapes. “I have those two things and either people are drawn really really to the one or really really to the other,” says Navas.
