Community Connect: Sherry Carter, SNAP Benefit Coordinator and Nutrition Educator for the Bibb County Extension
By Savannah Logan
In this edition of Community Connect I got to interview Sherry Carter, SNAP Benefit Coordinator and Nutrition Educator for the Bibb County Extension. With a deep commitment to promoting nutrition education in schools and working with community programs, Sherry has a profound impact on residents of Bibb and Chilton counties. Here, she shares insights into her work, family life, and the values that drive her to support her community.
Tell us about your family!
“I am married to Landon Carter, and we have three boys—Tyler, Lucas, and Rudy. Tyler and his wife, Emily, have two boys, Hudson and Greyson. We love to spend time together with all of our family.”
What do you do as SNAP Benefit Coordinator for the Bibb County Extension?
“I am a SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educator for Bibb and Chilton counties. I go into the Bibb County schools and teach Nutrition Education with kids during the school year and some summer programs. I also teach a Food Smarts Nutrition class with adults a couple of times a year. I work with Kevin Foster and the Agape Food Pantry by providing the food pantry recipients with nutritional teaching tools, educational handouts, and tastings of healthy recipes.”
What is your favorite program that the Extension offers?
“I love the physical activity aspect of the 4-H River Kids program (kayaking) and how it gets the kids out into nature, learning about water safety while kayaking some of Bibb County’s lakes and rivers. I also love the SNAP-Ed Body Quest Program with 3rd graders. It uses a set of anime warriors to get the kids excited about eating healthy foods, drinking, and being physically active.”
If budget was no issue, what kind of program would you like to see implemented?
“Totally free access to healthy foods and drinks for kids and adults!”
What do you like to do in your free time?
“I love to travel with my family and just spend time with them. My husband and two of our sons race dirt bikes, and we are always on the way to a race. I love the beach, and I also love just being outside with my two grandsons, Hudson and Greyson.”
Do you have any pets?
“We have one dog, a Boston Terrier named Dolly! She is a special dog and requires lots of attention and love. My grandsons love to play with her!”
Where is your dream vacation, or where is your favorite place you have ever traveled?
“My dream vacation would be to go and stay in a hut over the ocean at Bora Bora. Bora Bora is a small South Pacific island northwest of Tahiti in French Polynesia. It is absolutely stunning to look at pictures from this area—bucket list!”
Who is your favorite musician or artist?
“I have two. The late Jimmy Buffett—his music is so light, airy, and tropical! I also love Dolly Parton and all that she stands for. She does wonderful things with her book group for kids, Imagination Library. I also love her music!”
It’s been a long week – what are you doing to unwind?
“Come home, rest in my recliner, and spend time with my grandkids!”
What is your favorite meal?
“I love crab legs! Really, any seafood.”
What is a saying or motto that inspires you?
“It takes no more time to see the good side of life than to see the bad. It’s a fine line between Saturday night and Sunday morning.” — Jimmy Buffett
If you could go back and tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
“Save money and don’t sweat the small stuff!”
If you could sit down to dinner with any five people, alive or not, who would they be?
“My parents, who have both passed away—I miss them! Jimmy Buffett, Dolly Parton, and my sweet husband, Landon Carter. I think we could have some great conversation at that table!”
Through her work and family life, Sherry Carter continues to make a meaningful impact in Bibb County, bringing warmth and wisdom to everything she does. Her love for family, her dedication to nutrition education, and her enthusiasm for life are inspiring to everyone around her.
