New fees are coming to a national park in western Colorado.
Following proposals presented in the summer, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and adjacent Curecanti National Recreation Area will move ahead on new permits for wilderness access and increased charges at group campsites.
South Rim wilderness routes — called Tomichi, Gunnison and Warner — will require permits reserved in advance, joining routes in Red Rock Canyon previously placed on the booking system. Reserved at recreation.gov, the permits will be $6 plus $4 per person on the trip.
For trips between May and October, reservations will be available starting in April. For trips November through April, South Rim and Red Rock Canyon permits will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Black Canyon Visitor Center.
Meanwhile, in Curecanti National Recreation Area, group camping fees are increasing at East Elk Creek and Red Creek.
Accommodating between nine and 50 people, nightly charges at East Elk Creek will run $120. That will be $60 at Red Creek, which accommodates between nine and 20.
The changes “would bring both parks into closer alignment with comparable wilderness permits and group campgrounds,” a news release explained.
The release indicated 80% of collected fees will remain at Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Curecanti “to fund projects such as the rehabilitation of trails, upgrades to campgrounds and improvements to water, sewer, and solid waste systems.” The other 20% would spread across the National Park Service.
