โตโยต้า ไฮลักซ์ แชมป์ ถูกพัฒนาต่อยอดมาจากรถต้นแบบ IMV 0 ที่ถูกเผยโฉมไปก่อนหน้านี้ โดย อากิโอะ โตโยดะ ได้นำเสนอแนวคิดโครงการ IMV 0 เมื่อปีที่ผ่านมา ก่อนจะเกิดเป็นรถต้นแบบเพื่อนำไปใช้เป็น Pace Car ในการแข่งขัน Endurance Race บุรีรัมย์ 25 ชั่วโมง และมีการเปิดตัวในอินโดนีเซียและฟิลิปปินส์ จากนั้นจึงนำไปจัดแสดงที่งาน Japan Mobility Show เมื่อช่วงปลายเดือนตุลาคมที่ผ่านมา โนริอากิ ยามาชิตะ กรรมการผู้จัดการใหญ่ บริษัทโตโยต้า มอเตอร์ ประเทศไทย จำกัด กล่าวว่า นับตั้งแต่เปิดตัวIMV รุ่นแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ.2547 ได้มีการส่งมอบรถIMVให้กับลูกค้าชาวไทยแล้วจำนวนทั้งสิ้นกว่า2.7 ล้านคัน นอกจากประสบความสำเร็จด้วยการขายภายในประเทศแล้วเราได้ส่งออกรถในโครงการIMV กว่า4ล้านคัน ไปจำหน่ายยังประเทศอื่นๆ กว่า120 ประเทศจนโครงการIMVถูกขนานนามว่า “รถกระบะมหาชน”และได้สร้างความสัมพันธ์อันดีระหว่างคนไทยกับโตโยต้าเมื่อเริ่มต้นโครงการIMV0 ว่า“โปรเจ็กต์ใหม่นี้ไม่ใช่แค่การเปลี่ยนรุ่นใหม่ของIMV เท่านั้น แต่มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อทำให้อนาคตของเราดีขึ้นและสดใสยิ่งขึ้นไปพร้อมกับคนไทย” ด้วยคำพูดนี้ทำให้การพัฒนาIMV 0 กลับสู่แนวคิดเดิมของIMV อีกครั้งและตั้งชื่อรถรุ่นนี้ว่า…
