จากการประชุมหารือการฟื้นฟูประชากร ‘ควายป่า’ และถิ่นอาศัยในประเทศไทย ภายใต้หัวข้อ การนำเสนอข้อมูลอนุกรมวิธานในสายวิวัฒนาการของควายป่าและควายบ้านในประเทศไทย โดย น.สพ.ดร.มาโนชญ์ ยินดี วิทยาลัยสัตวแพทยศาสตร์อัครราชกุมารี มหาวิทยาลัยวลัยลักษณ์ พบว่า ประเทศไทยเป็นศูนย์กลางการเลี้ยงควายในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ในช่วงระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2550 มีการเก็บตัวอย่างเลือดของควายเลี้ยงในประเทศไทยจำนวน 6 จุด รวม 60 ตัวอย่าง และได้มีโอกาสเก็บมูลควายป่าในเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าห้วยขาแข้งจำนวน 1 ตัวอย่าง แต่มีอุปสรรคคือการเก็บตัวอย่างจากมูลสัตว์จะได้ข้อมูลดีเอ็นเอสายสั้น จากนั้นนำข้อมูลที่ได้ไปวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ของพันธุกรรมจากควายป่าที่เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าห้วยขาแข้ง กับสัตว์ในตระกูลควายป่าที่พบในโลก พบว่าควายป่าของไทยเป็นตัวเริ่มต้นของควายปลักทั่วไปในประเทศจีน ควายป่าในประเทศไทยมีความหลากหลายทางพันธุกรรมมากกว่าควายเลี้ยงในจีน เนื่องจากว่าควายป่าในประเทศไทยมีวิวัฒนาการมาเป็นเวลานานกว่า 3,000 ปี ในขณะที่ควายเลี้ยงในจีนมีวิวัฒนาการมาจากควายป่าในประเทศไทยเมื่อประมาณ 1,000 ปีที่แล้ว ภาพความสัมพันธ์ของพันธุ์กรรมจากควายป่าที่เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าห้วยขาแข้ง กับสัตว์ในตระกูลควายป่าที่พบในโลก ปี พ.ศ. 2552 ศึกษา cytochrome b (ยีนที่อยู่ในไมโตคอนเดรียลดีเอ็นเอที่นิยมนำมาใช้ในการจำแนกชนิดของสิ่งมีชีวิตในสัตว์) ใน 10 ประเทศ และพบว่าจุดกำเนิดของควายปลัก (swamp buffalo) อยู่บริเวณสามเหลี่ยมทองคำ ซึ่งประกอบด้วยประเทศไทย พม่า…
