Sabina Albertine Miller of Thibodaux has been invited to participate in this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, a major honor for the local artist, whose roots run deep in Louisiana soil and tradition.

Sabina will be demonstrating a rare and beautiful Southern craft at Jazz Fest: waxed flower making, an art form passed down from her mother, Albertine Louis, who learned the technique growing up on St. Joseph Plantation. With vibrant colors and dozens of intricate floral variations, Sabina’s work is more than decorative, it’s a living piece of culture.

“Most importantly,” she says, “I will be demonstrating the origami-type Southern waxed flower craft on-site at Jazz Fest.”

Though the flowers began with her mother, it wasn’t until three years ago that Sabina realized just how significant her role as a tradition bearer had become. “The Louisiana Folklore Society called and told me they’d spent over two years trying to find someone who still knew how to make these flowers,” she recalls. “The rest is history.”

Alongside her live demonstration, Sabina will also be showcasing scores of her colorful floral arrangements, each a celebration of memory, resilience, and regional beauty. Her work will be available to view on her Facebook page, Sabina A. Miller, where those interested can also contact her directly for purchases.

A multimedia artist, writer, speaker, and talk show host, Sabina is known for blending personal history with visual storytelling. From waxed and dried flower sculpture to poetry, painting, and even culinary art, she invented “Pralines-In-A-Jar”, her creativity reflects a lifetime of learning and honoring where she comes from.

As she prepares for Jazz Fest, Sabina brings not just her craft, but her heart. “Every piece tells a story,” she says. “And every flower holds a little bit of home.”
