Woman rescued from upside-down car in creek Thursday morning

DES MOINES, Iowa — A woman was transported to the hospital after a car ended up in a creek upside down Thursday morning on Des Moines’ north side.

Lt. Trevor Barber with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said a call came in at 7:20 a.m. about a car in a creek on NW 6th Drive, just north of NW 43rd Avenue. That’s just southeast of the Bridgestone tire plant.

The driver of the car, an adult woman, was conscious and talking when emergency crews arrived. They were able to get her out of the car and she was transported to a Des Moines hospital. Lt. Barber said her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Lt. Barber said the caller did not witness the crash so they aren’t sure when it happened or how long the woman was trapped in her vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said NW 6th Drive between Aurora Avenue and Hoffman Lane was blocked off while investigators gathered evidence and the scene was cleared. It re-opened around 8:45 a.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
