19-year-old woman dies after car crash on I-664 S in Chesapeake


VSP says that just before 6 p.m. on Monday they were called to investigate a two-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of I-664 in the Bowers Hill area.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A person has died after a two-vehicle car crash on Monday in Chesapeake on I-664 S.

Virginia State Police say that just before 6 p.m. they were called to investigate a two-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of I-664 in the Bowers Hill area.

Investigations reveal that a 2000 grey Toyota Solara and a 2008 red Pontiac Vibe were driving southbound when they made contact. Both drivers lost control and ran off the roadway. 

They both struck the guardrail causing the Pontiac to overturn. The driver of the Pontiac, 18-year-old Elvis Cruz, was taken to Norfolk Sentara Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and sole occupant of the Toyota, 19-year-old Lauryn Leonard of Suffolk, died on impact. Notification has been made to the family.

Virginia State Police say the crash is under investigation and charges are pending.

State Police are seeking witnesses who saw these two vehicles traveling southbound on I-664 before or at the time of the crash. Witnesses are encouraged to call state police at (804) 750-8788 or email them at [email protected].
