LOWELL — A two-car crash in the Acre late Friday afternoon sent two people to the hospital and forced a section of Fletcher Street to be blocked off to traffic for about 35 minutes.
The wreck, involving a BMW 440i xDrive and a Honda Civic, took place at the intersection of Fletcher and Franklin streets at approximately 3:15 p.m. Emergency crews on scene said two people involved in the crash were transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
A witness to the crash’s aftermath said the man and woman who were taken to the hospital had been inside the Honda, and they were both conscious and alert at the scene.
“They got out, they were walking, they seemed to be fine,” the witness said.
The man who was operating the BMW was also conscious and alert, and was walking around on scene. He was alone inside the vehicle.
The witness said he heard the crunch of the impact from inside a nearby building. He added that he was baffled as to how the two cars ended up in the position they did.
Both vehicles came to a rest facing outbound on Fletcher Street, with the BMW mashed against the rear of the Honda. Both vehicles, however, displayed front-end damage.
“We don’t understand which way the BMW was coming,” the witness said. “How did he spin him around like that? … It’s a very odd accident.”
Emergency vehicles blocked the short stretch of Fletcher Street, between Suffolk and Dublin streets, as Lowell police and firefighters worked at the scene. In two instances, drivers passing by maneuvered around the emergency vehicles, ignoring the roadblocks. One of the drivers drove up on a sidewalk along Franklin Street in order to get around a parked fire truck.
The scene was cleared by emergency crews at approximately 3:50 p.m.
