FORT WORTH — The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Sunday night announced the six finalists for this year’s contest:
Carter Johnson, Canada/United States, 28
Philipp Lynov, Russia, 26
Evren Ozel, United States, 26
Aristo Sham, Hong Kong China, 29
Vitaly Starikov, Israel/Russia, 30
Angel Stanislav Wang, United States, 22
The names were announced at Bass Performance Hall by pianist Paul Lewis, chair of the competition jury. It came after Sunday afternoon and evening recitals concluding the contest’s five-day Semifinal Round.
In two previous rounds the competition narrowed a field of 28 pianists to 17 Quarterfinalists and 12 Semifinalists.
In the Final Round, running Tuesday through Saturday at Bass Hall, with Thursday off, each of the 6 finalists will play two piano concertos with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, led by guest conductor Marin Alsop. They will compete for three top prizes and a number of other awards.
