After skipping the 2025 model year due to high inventory levels of the 2024 version, Subaru returns for 2026 with a refreshed iteration of its all-electric Solterra SUV. We are on-site at the New York Auto Show for a closer look at the updated 2026 Subaru Solterra.

Technical Improvements for 2026

The 2026 Solterra benefits from several key technical upgrades. Most notably, it sees a significant power boost thanks to dual electric motors—one on each axle—delivering a combined 338 horsepower. This is a notable jump from the previous model’s 215 horsepower. Subaru has not yet disclosed total torque figures.

According to Subaru, battery capacity will increase to 77 kWh in 2026, allowing Solterra to offer an estimated range of up to 450 kilometres on a single charge. For comparison, the 2024 Solterra offered a range of 359 kilometres. Charging speeds have also improved, now supporting up to 150 kW. The 2026 Solterra has a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, and Subaru has confirmed the addition of battery preconditioning to improve charging efficiency in colder conditions.

The 2026 Solterra now has a towing capacity of 1,500 kilograms. It’s worth noting that Subaru did not recommend towing with the previous generation of this electric SUV.

A Subtly Updated Exterior

Visually, the 2026 Subaru Solterra has been refreshed with a more modern design. The front fascia is completely redesigned and features new LED headlights for a more contemporary look.

When the body is finished in white or silver, the wheel arches are painted to match. In other colours, the arches remain black. This gives the Solterra a more urban appearance, slightly dialling down the rugged, off-road vibe.

The 2026 Solterra can be equipped with either 18- or 20-inch wheels. Ground clearance remains unchanged at 210 millimetres.

Upgraded Interior Comfort and Technology

Inside, the updated Solterra now comes standard with a large 14-inch touchscreen. New radiant heaters have also been added to the front cabin area to increase comfort while reducing the energy draw of the standard climate control system, helping preserve driving range in colder weather.

Subaru has confirmed that the first Canadian-bound units of the 2026 Solterra will begin arriving later this year. Pricing will be announced at a later date, and the number of available trims has yet to be confirmed. The 2026 Solterra will continue to be built in Japan.
