A little history was made at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A girls tennis individual championships on Saturday, for opposite reasons.

In singles, Rocky Mount’s McKinley Battle needed three sets to become her school’s first state champion, taking down Forestview’s Rennie Liu 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

The junior made a big leap from exiting in the first round of last year’s tournament. Meanwhile, Liu ended her career as a four-time qualifier, having won at least one match in all four tries and going one round farther in each of the last three seasons.

In doubles, Terry Sanford’s Pauline Bui and Loren Galaviz dethroned defending champions Caroline and Kathryn Adkins of Fike with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Bui and Galaviz’s victory marks the seventh time the Bulldogs have won a doubles title, tying them for the most among NCHSAA schools. However, Terry Sanford had not won a singles or doubles title in 27 years — since 1996 — before Saturday’s match.

The first and second rounds of the NCHSAA 3A individual championships were played Friday, and semifinals and finals were Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.

In doubles, both the pairs from Fike (3A East) and from Terry Sanford (3A Mideast) were also regional champs. Joining them in the semifinals were 3A West regional champs Anslee Falls and Eleina Moon of Lake Norman Charter, as well as Shea Bieniek and Andi Brinker of Cape Fear, who took out 3A West regional champ Lauren and Lydia Holland of Franklin in the second round.

In singles, Liu, Battle and Lake Norman Charter’s Luci Falls represented the 3A West, Mideast, and Midwest, respectively, as regional champions who made it semifinals. The lone regional champ to not make it that far was Hunt’s Reagan Owens, who was knocked out in the first round by South Point’s Lauren Lucas. Carrboro’s Emma Shriver then defeated Lucas to advance to the semis.
