4 hurt after suspected DUI driver crashes into Manteca pizza restaurant

Broken glass, a boarded wall, and scattered car parts remain at Jack’s Pizza and Bar in Manteca after a suspected DUI driver crashed into the building. The crash happened Sunday evening, according to the Manteca Police Department. “That was scary,” customer Mae Gribbin said. “I thought, ‘Here I am down here to pick up a pizza, and I could’ve been there when the… If I would’ve left my house even 15 minutes earlier, I would’ve been in the middle of it.”Authorities say the suspected DUI driver, an Oakland woman, had two small children in the vehicle. Police said the children, one of whom is an infant, were secured in their car seats, sustained no injuries, and were released to their father. Witnesses said they saw the car speeding as it traveled northbound on Union Road.“Until we get all the data analyzed, we’re not going to know an exact speed; we’ll be pretty close,” Manteca police Sgt. William Mueller said. Police said the car smashed into a power pole, which has since been repaired. Nearby businesses said the power had gone out in some businesses for hours. Police said four customers were injured in the crash and sent to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to severe. Some customers who spoke with KCRA 3 said they are still trying to understand how the crash happened. “It was horrible. I just couldn’t figure out how that car came in at that angle,” Gribbin said. Businesses and residents say the intersection of Yosemite Avenue and Union Road, where the crash happened, is no stranger to speeding and accidents. “This intersection right here, turning into this, you’ll have people that’ll stop. Some people don’t see them stop; some people are pulling out; some people really need to really start to be mindful when they’re driving as well,” Mueller said. The restaurant’s owners did not want to speak on camera but said all their employees are OK. Owners met with a contractor to assess the damage and determine when they might re-open.
