Buffalo Nichols to play Thrasher, art exhibit on Fond du Lac’s can’t-miss events list


FOND DU LAC – There’s a variety of events to choose from in the new year.

Buffalo Nichols will play the Thrasher, which also is home to a new exhibit by MWVAC artists. Other events include a bridal fair, a hockey game and a kirtan event.

Here are five can’t-miss events happening in the community this week.

1. Buffalo Nichols will play Jan. 6 at Thrasher Opera House

Carl “Buffalo” Nichols will make his Thrasher Opera House debut at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 6. Buffalo Nichols blends elements of folk, rock, blues, and more, defying a set genre.

The Thrasher Opera House is located at 506 Mill St., Green Lake. It was built in 1910, restored in 1997, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

2. New Thrasher exhibit to feature work by MWVAC artists

A new exhibit by the Mid-Wisconsin Visual Arts Connection will be on display beginning Jan. 3 at the Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake. It will be on display through March 3.

An artist reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. Jan. 6. The public is welcome.

MWVAC is a collective of regional artists designed to maintain a registry of local artists, foster communication among artists in the area, and facilitate exhibition and educational opportunities. All new works will be shown in this exhibit, and various media will be represented, from paintings and photography to ceramic pieces and textiles.

3. Fond du Lac Bridal Faire set for Jan. 4 at Thelma

The Fond du Lac Bridal Faire 2024 is set for Jan. 4 at Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts, 51 Sheboygan St. The event will run 4 to 7 p.m. and includes more than 40 wedding booths.

Brides can register for prizes, with a grand prize of $500 in airfare. Roving models will show off the latest in wedding attire.

General admission is $5 in advance or $10 at the door. Admission is free for brides who register in advance in advance at wfdl.com.

4. Fond du Lac Bears hockey team to face Ice Dogs

The Fond du Lac Bears, a full-check hockey team, will face the Fox Cities Ice Dogs Jan. 5. The game begins at 8 p.m. at Blue Line Family Ice Center, 550 Fond du Lac Ave.

The Bears are part of the Great Lakes Hockey league and compete all over the country.

5. Public welcome to take part in Kirtan musical event

A musical event, Kirtan with Penny Praiser-Wilson of Love, Light, and Harmony, will be presented at 7 p.m. Jan. 5. It will be held at the Fond du Lac Center for Spirituality & Healing, 1020 S. Main St.

Kirtan is a form of Bhakti yoga originating in the Indian Vedic tradition. The singing of chants is accompanied by musical instruments and rhythmic drumming. The audience is encouraged to participate by chanting, dancing and clapping.
