Russell Brand and Katy Perry had only been married for 14 months when the singer of “Roar” found out a secret about the comic.
The former couple met for the first time in 2009 on the set of Brand’s movie Get Him to the Greek. A year later, they got married.
New accusations of rape and sexual abuse against the comedian have put Perry and Brand’s relationship in the spotlight.
In an interview with Vogue in 2013, Perry talked about how her ex-husband was “controlling” and said that their marriage was “really hurtful.”
“At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, ‘I can’t handle the equalness,’” Perry said.
Brand told the singer via text message that he was divorcing her right before she was about to go on stage for a big show, as told in Katy Perry’s Part of Me concert documentary.
The Dark Horse singer told the source at the time, “I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day.”
The information Perry found isn’t clear, but it might have something to do with Brand’s new claims.
Several women have accused the comic of raping and sexually assaulting them. The alleged crimes happened between 2006 and 2013.
