Gerard Butler Is Back in the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Series

Gerard Butler is returning to the How to Train Your Dragon series. Dean DeBlois, the original live-action co-director, will see the actor reprise his father’s role as Stoick the Vast.

Mason Thames from The Black Phone and Nico Parker from The Last of Us will play Hiccup (originally voiced by Jay Baruchel) and Astrid (America Ferrera) in the production. Universal has set a June 13, 2025 deadline for the project.

The original DreamWorks Animation trilogy, based on Cressida Cowell’s books, told the story of a young Viking boy and his dragon, Toothless. The trilogy was released between 2010 and 2019, grossing more than $1.6 billion globally.

Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, the president of Platt’s banner, are producing through Marc Platt Productions. Lexi Barta is in charge of Universal.

Butler earned his breakthrough in the 2006 picture 300 and has since been in the CIA drama Kandahar and the Lionsgate action film Plane. He is represented by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment.

Deadline was the first to break the story.
