On Monday, a jury absolved the Uber driver guilty of killing eight people in a 2017 Halloween attack in New York City by plowing across a bike path of the death penalty. Sayfullo Saipov was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole because the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. The jury also decided that Saipov intentionally murdered his victims for ISIS. In January, he was convicted on 28 charges for the attack, which was the bloodiest in New York since 9/11. Deputy United States Attorney Amanda Houle said that Saipov merits the death punishment for his “remorseless killing of innocent bystanders.” David Patton, the defendant’s attorney, urged the jury to sentence him to life in prison so he would “die in obscurity, not as a hero or a martyr.” New York has not executed anyone for a federal offense since 1953.
