Sunday night, costume designer Ruth E. Carter made history again by receiving her second Oscar for Best Costume Design. As she won her award, the Academy disclosed that she is now the first African-American woman to win multiple Oscars in any category. Carter earned her first Oscar in the same category in 2019 for her work on the first Black Panther film, making her the first African woman to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design. After her second historic win, she told the media that she “pulled herself up by her boot straps” as a child to develop into the prominent figure she is today. “I studied. I struggled. “I faced hardship in the industry that did not always resemble me,” Carter remarked.
