‘Paradise Is Burning’ Wins Best Film at the Swedish Film Awards

The social drama Paradise Is Burning, directed by Mika Gustafson, has won Sweden’s top movie honor, the Guldbagge honor for Best Picture.

The film, which premiered in Venice’s Horizons section this year, follows three sisters who, when their mother fled, were left to live anarchic, free lives.

To avoid being placed in foster care, the oldest child must find someone to masquerade as their mother when social services calls.

It was named the best Swedish picture of the previous year at the Guldbagge Awards event in Stockholm on Monday night. Additionally, Paris is Burning received the Guldbagge for Catharina Nyqvist Ehrnrooth’s best set design.

But Axel Petersén’s Shame on Dry Land triumphed that evening. In addition to winning the majority of the technical categories, the neo-noir film, based in the world of internet gamblers, received seven Guldbagge awards, including best director and best actor for Joel Spira, the lead actor. The film, which had its Toronto premiere, was not nominated for Best Picture.

Marall Nasiri received best actress for her starring role in Milad Alami’s play Opponent, which follows a family fleeing Iran for Northern Sweden.

Lukas Moodysson received best script for Together 99, the sequel to his 2000 international blockbuster Together about life in a Swedish commune. Anja Lundqvist, who costarred in Together 99, was also named Best Supporting Actress.
