Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Vaishnaw said that the demand for chips above 28 nm was still there, and India would capture that market first. The government, he said, was also ensuring that there was a well-rounded semiconductor ecosystem in India.

“We have close to 300,000 design engineers designing practically every complex chip that is manufactured in the world. So, it is very natural to move on to the value chain and towards manufacturing. We are looking at developing the complete ecosystem of semiconductors,” Vaishnaw said at a panel at the WEF.
The world is trusting India more of late because of the way it has conducted its foreign policy which has become a big capital for the country, he said. India, he said, had signed cooperation pacts with the US, the EU, and Japan and was working with the South Korean as well as South Korean companies in the semiconductor space.
“We think there is enough for everybody. It is a question of how much importance we give, how much talent we put in it and how focused we are on it,” he said.
The biggest priority, he said, is on semiconductor design where the country is evolving from being a back office for fabrication companies to producing the complete chip and going out to the customers to take the concept and develop the entire integrated chip.

“The second big focus for us is to make sure that talent for all parts of the ecosystem gets developed. And it that, it is very important to upgrade the course curriculums, to make sure that we are connected with the companies that are working in the space,” Vaishnaw said. India will also focus on developing a new ecosystem of green energy with a capacity of 30,000 MW at a single location to power the semiconductor fabrication units, the data centres, and other infrastructures, the union minister said.
