A serious discussion unfolded on Margaret Court Arena following Jannik Sinner’s three-set victory over Sebastian Baez.
Speaking courtside after his second-round victory on Wednesday, Sinner joked that he wished he had a body fit for Baywatch with a bit more muscle.
If Sinner’s power could not be traced back to his muscle mass, commentator Jim Courier was convinced that his skill must be connected to his racquet.
Asked if his racquet is “any good”, a wry smile swept across Sinner’s face.
“Yes, it is,” he said courtside.
Courier then asked Sinner to show him his playing racquet and explain its features.
Asked if it was a “normal” racquet that one could walk into a shop and purchase off the shelf, Sinner was coy.
“Secrets, guys,” Sinner said to a roar of laughter from the crowd.
“Honestly, many players ask me what racquet I play with and I think it’s a normal racquet, to be honest.
“If I’m honest…”
Courier then jumped in to demand Sinner tell the truth.
“You keep saying you’re being honest which just tells me you’re lying. All you’re doing is lying. Come clean, man,” he said with a smile.
