TCU WOMEN’S TENNIS OPENS 2024 SEASON VS NORTHWESTERN STATE


FORT WORTH – The TCU women’s tennis team is set to host Northwestern State in first dual meet of the season Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. 
 
First serve will be at 3 p.m. and admission is free. Pizza and 2024 schedule magnets will be handed out to all fans.

FROG FOCUS
The Horned Frogs competed in nine tournaments over the course of the fall season with an overall record of 24-17 in doubles and 35-36 in singles. Destinee Martins and Isabel Pascual led the team in doubles recording a 9-7 record. Martins, Pascual and Helena Narmont each tallied a team leading, seven, singles wins over the course of the tournament season. 
 
Martins enters the season as the highest ranked Frog in the ITA singles standings at No. 58. The senior had a breakout performance at the ITA Texas Regionals in October where she advanced to the semifinals before falling to Texas’ No. 45 Malaika Rapolu.
 
Jade Otway enters the spring as the highest ranked Frog in the WTA standings at No. 933. The junior closed out last season being named MVP of the NIT National Championship. She competed in two tournaments in the fall and finished with a 2-3 record in singles. 
 
Spring transfer Chiho Mushika will play on the purple courts for the first time in her career on Saturday. Mushika transferred from the University of San Francisco where she posted a 13-7 singles record. The graduate student is ranked No. 1215 in the WTA singles rankings. 
 
Freshman, Raquel Caballero Chica will be playing her first dual on the purple courts against the Demons after a successful showing at the Miami Invitational. Caballero took down her UCF singles opponent in three sets before winning doubles 7-4 alongside Otway. The duo went on to take down a pair from No. 17 Vanderbilt on day three in one set (7-5).  The Spaniard had the second most wins of the fall season with five. 
 
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
TCU leads the series against Northwestern 3-0 with the latest matchup coming from last season where the Frogs swept the Demons 6-0. This matchup will be Northwestern State’s first dual match of the season.
