Unashamedly jumping on the new year resolutions bandwagon, lists can include anything from the basic (In: 9pm bedtimes) to the more specific: Out: eating gerkins after 8pm. There’s really no rhyme or reason to what’s included on an in/out list, and they can be completely tailored to you and your lifestyle.
Apparently, the idea for these definitive lists is likely to have originated from The Washington Post, which started publishing a pop culture list titled “The List: What’s In and Out” on New Year’s Day in 1977. While the original version mostly referenced people, places, and shows, the newest iteration for the TikTok generation includes habits you’re trying to leave behind and goals you want to reach over the next 12 months.
And this includes beauty trends and habits. So here’s Weekend’s guide to what’s in and out for beauty lovers in 2024:
IN: Mob wife era OUT: Clean girl era
It seems as if the TikTok algorithms spew out a new beauty trend (if trend means repackaging a previous trend and slapping a food related term) every 30 seconds. With a pared back beauty look, a la no make-up makeup the visage de jour for some time, it’s not surprising that this one completely bucks it. Think volume and waves/curls, gold jewellery galore and smudgey eyeliner paired with red lips. And hack, why not throw on a fur (faux if you prefer) coat and amp up the glam to channel Sofia Vergara as Columbian Queenpin Griselda Blanco in Netflix’s Griselda.
IN: Bold eyeliner OUT: Subtle eyeliner
During the clean girl era, eyeliner was pretty subtle and minimal. Usually it was limited to a soft brown wing with mid toned eyeshadow, but in 2024 we’re going to see a return to bold, inky graphic liner. Tutorials for kohl liner along the waterline are making a comeback on TikTok, and Instagram It Girls are reaching for colourful liners and pairing them with mismatched eyeshadows for an interesting take on the trend.
IN: Square nails OUT: Coffin nails
Much like arbitrary rejection of the much loved millennial side part, oval nails are over. It’s square nails only for 2024 so those pointy tips that doubled up as a handy self-defence deterrent are in the bin. Square nails also means the rise of shorter nails and using your nails to make ever elaborate artistic statements is over. This year will be the year of minimalist monochrome nails and French tips. Red will always be a classic choice and it’s unlikely people will be giving up the glazed nails popularised by Hailey Bieber last year.
IN: Colour mascara OUT: Brown mascara
Let Weekend preface this by saying that we actually don’t think beauty lovers will be throwing their brown mascaras into the bin anytime soon after reigning supreme throughout last year, but rather mascaras of a variety of colours will be vying for our attention over the next 12 months. Testament to this is the fact that Maybelline released its viral Sky High mascara in burgundy and ’80s favourite, blue, which is also set to make a comeback in eyeshadow trends this year.
IN: ‘90s lips OUT: Hyper glossy lips
Quick! Grab your mum’s old lipstick from her old vanity before she digs it and relives her supermodel era… yes, contoured lips are still in, even if GenZ continues to persist with lip oils in a bid to have their lips become a safety hazard on a motorway because they’re *just so reflective* they dazzle drivers. Coffee nude tones, sepia lip liner – have your fill. Just remember to give the Zoomer in your life the side eye when they insist that traditional lipstick is out. Glossy may be here to stay for a while longer, but think more nude lip tones rather than bright colours.
IN: Bodycare OUT: Laborious skincare routines
With Selena Gomez releasing her own body products under her brand, Rare Beauty at the end of 2024 – along with Sol de Janeiro sending the beauty community into an absolute frenzy with its latest release, Delicia Body Butter (which bizarrely led to headlines, yes, headlines when a wrong claim that the product’s scent attracted wolf spiders went viral, prompting the brand to actually release a statement categorically dismissing it). But the spidey senses (ahem) aren’t wrong though about taking more care of our bods throughout 2024; scrubs, massages, body brushing – all of them are going to make us feel more guilty when we step out of the shower only to immediately throw a robe on. What we won’t miss though, are 25-step night-time skincare routines that require multiple masks, Gua tools and scary LED masks. After all, was the glass skin glow really that flattering?
IN: Neutral blush tones OUT: Cool-tone pink blush
The latter was all over our social feeds in 2023, thanks in part to the Dior Backstage glowy blush shade and the Barbie movie but change appears to be in the air, with a move towards less ‘babydoll’ blush shades. Think more earthy, neutral tones closer to your skintone – tones that require zero thought when you’ve got five minutes to make your bus in the morning in any finish you desire (dewy formulas are still in, thanks to Elf releasing dupes of the TikTok famous Rare Beauty Soft Touch Liquid Blushes) and go basically with whatever lip combo you feel like.
IN: Subtle faux lashes OUT: Over-the-top faux lashes
Obvious OTT falsies are out, and instead think: your lashes but better (YLBB). Opt for lash defining mascara in tubing formulas to forgo the clumpy look if faux lashes aren’t your thing at all. But if they are, try out eyelash clusters or singles as a way of creating more glamour. In 2024, your false lashes should look natural and lifted.
IN: Your brows, your way OUT: Following brow tends
There were some tentative signs that thin brows were making a comeback (gulp) albeit not in that hyper razor-thin way of the ’90s, but of course, fluffy, thicker brow products were still dominating throughout 2023. Weekend thinks the best eyebrow look is to embrace what you have brow-wise. If you don’t have brows that have space between the hairs, then forget about trying to paint on individual hairstrokes with a brow pen and try filling them in for a defined brow look. Likewise, if you’ve been blessed with thicker brows, then don’t try to thin them out – and vice versa. Rock the best brow look for you (and frankly, that goes for any beauty trend).
