NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team will travel to Southern Methodist University to face the Mustangs on Sunday for the first dual match of the season.
No. 17 Vanderbilt last competed at the Miami Spring Invite against Texas Christian University and No. 23 Miami. The team finished the 2022-23 season with a 16-12 record and were selected for the NCAA Tournament for the 28th consecutive year. Célia-Belle Mohr was named an All-American and received a berth into the NCAA Singles Championship, reaching the second round.
Five Commodores will be entering Sunday’s game among the top players in the nation: In singles, Mohr at No. 14, Bridget Stammel at No. 24, Valeria Ray at No. 75 and Holly Staff at No. 95, and in doubles Mohr/Anessa Lee and Ray/Staff were ranked at No. 17 and No. 59, respectively.
Southern Methodist is 0-2 this season, having fallen to No. 15 Duke and No. 9 NC State. SMU posted 2-5 against Duke and 0-7 to NC State and will be looking for their first victory on Sunday. Last year, they won the American Athletic Conference Championship and earned an NCAA Tournament berth. SMU went 16-9 overall and 10-1 at home during 2023. Hadley Doyle was named the AAC Player of the Year and Coach Jeff Nevolo was the conference Coach of the Year. Doyle and five teammates return to SMU’s roster this season.
