Tennis Opens 2024 With Sweep


SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women’s tennis team opened the spring portion of the season in style, sweeping Army West Point 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club.

The Orange (1-0) picked up the doubles point thanks to a clean 6-0 sweep from Polina Kozyreva and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya at number two doubles, followed by a 6-3 win from Ines Fonte and Anastasia Sysoeva in the third flight of doubles. 

Shiori Ito and Miyuka Kimoto paired up for a 6-3 doubles win at the top spot, opening up with a 4-0 lead before Cooper Jackson and Paige Herremans won three-straight games to make it 4-3. Kimoto and Ito shut the door, winning the next three games to finalize doubles action.

Ito led off with the first singles win of the day, picking off Paulina Feoli 6-0, 6-1 in number six singles. Sysoeva was next in the book, topping Isabella Brilliant 6-2, 6-0 in Sysoeva’s first dual match with the Orange.

Kozyreva had the decisive point in number two singles, knocking off Emma Sy 6-2, 6-0 for the fourth Syracuse point. Fonte picked up the next ‘Cuse win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Herremans in number four singles.

With most of the match finished, Kanapatskaya concluded her number three singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ylan Duong before Kimoto battled for the final win of the day, clinching a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jackson in the top singles match up.

The Orange return to Drumlins Country Club on Sunday for an 11 a.m. showdown against another in-state foe, Fordham. ACC Network Extra will have coverage of the Sunday showdown.
