Morgantown, W.Va. – The Duquesne University women’s tennis team dropped its season opener at West Virginia on Saturday morning, 7-0, at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown, W.Va. With the slip, the Dukes fall to 0-1 on the season while the Mountaineers improve to 1-0.
West Virginia earned the doubles point on Saturday after winning a pair of matches in the session. Junior Kaya Rand and freshman Mila Badics were down 5-4 to Momoko Nagato and Michaela Hucharova before the match was recorded as unfinished. In position two, graduate student Daniela Latoni and sophomore Jasa Roka dropped a 6-4 decision to Love-Star Alexis and Ting-Pei Chang. Senior Ana Utrilla Benito and freshman Sofia Serrano fell by a 6-1 count to Maya Bordereau and Maja Dodik in the third slot.
The Mountaineers swept all six singles matches at the Summit Tennis Academy to secure the match. Latoni suffered a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Alexis at the first slot while Rand was downed by Nagato at the second position by a 6-3, 7-5 count. Roka dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match at the third singles to Chang while Badics suffered a 6-3, 6-0 defeat to Bordereau in the fourth slot. Sophomore Taisia Yakunina was delt a 6-2, 6-2 loss by Dodik at the fifth singles and senior Ellen Shanahan suffered a 6-3, 6-0 defeat to Tatiana Lipatova at the sixth position.

The Dukes return to action when they host Western Michigan on Friday, Jan. 20, for a non-conference match at the Alpha Tennis And Fitness of Pittsburgh. Opening serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
