DEKALB, Ill. – James Madison women’s tennis battled tough on numerous courts, but #25 Wisconsin was able to put matches away to take the match 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Tennis Center.
The Badgers moved to 1-0 this spring while the Dukes fell to 0-2.
Wisconsin won the match with a pair of doubles victories and wins on five of six courts.
Daria Munteanu registered JMU’s first individual triumph of the spring with a tight win on court two while Hope Moulin forced a third set, ultimately dropping a tiebreak.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- Wisconsin grabbed the early 1-0 match lead with wins on courts one and three.
- The team of Xinyu Cai and Alin Mukhortova downed Cate Broerman and Moulin, 6-1, on court one for the doubles advantage.
- The Badgers clinched the point on court three, where Kaja Jacobson and Ariel Johnson defeated Hayley Glen and Reka Matko, 6-2.
- The court-two match between Munteanu and Ines Oliveira and UW’s Taylor Cataldi and Maria Sholokhova went unfinished, at 3-4.
Singles Play
- The Badgers quickly doubled the lead to 2-0 on court one, as Sholokova, ranked 67th nationally, didn’t concede game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Broerman.
- After rallying to take the first set in a tiebreak, Johnson beat Oliveira in straight sets on court three by scores of 7-6 (5), 6-3.
- Munteanu got JMU on the board with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over on court two in a highly-contested bout.
- Wisconsin secured the team win on court five, as Ellison Reynoldson claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Alexandra Prudente.
- In arguably the tightest match of the day, Jacobson and Moulin battled to a third-set tiebreak, as the Badger overcame multiple match points to earn a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (1) triumph on court four.
- Rosie Garcia Gross capped off Wisconsin’s victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sara Sadadinovic on court six.
