PC Travels to Columbia for Match Against the Gamecocks


COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Blue Hose women’s tennis team is heading to the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C. for a match against the South Carolina Gamecocks at 4 p.m.

SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS
– South Carolina University is set to play their first match of the season on Sunday against Coastal Carolina at 12:00 p.m. before their match against PC.
– The Gamecocks enter this season after coming off of a 13-11 2023 spring season.
– Graduate student Ayana Akli led the team in singles last season with 34 wins.
– Akli paired up with junior Sarah Hamner last season where they earned 18 doubles wins.
– Sunday’s match will be the first time that these two teams will meet since 1985.
 
LAST TIME OUT
After opening the season with a 6-1 win over Queens University of Charlotte, the Blue Hose fell to Charlotte University 1-6. Presbyterian’s Valentina De Sousa beat Charlotte’s Emma Wilkins 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) to give the Blue Hose their only point of the day.
 
A LOOK AT THE BLUE HOSE
Presbyterian was picked third in the conference’s preseason poll which is the highest in the program’s history. Last season the Blue Hose won 29.8 percent of their singles matches and 35.7 percent of their doubles matches. Last season, Lucianna Piedra and Claudia Sanchez led the team with eight singles wins, while winning nine doubles matches together. Both Piedra and Sanchez will be competing in the upcoming spring season.
 
SPRING SLATE
Head coach Joel Roberts 2024 spring slate features 21 matches including 16 outside of the conference beginning with this weekend’s matches in Charlotte. PC will play 11 matches at the Templeton tennis courts here at Presbyterian College this spring. In conference play, PC hosts Longwood, Gardner-Webb, and Charleston Southern.
