INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s tennis team defeated the Marian Knights in their home opener on Saturday, 5-2. The Jags earned four singles wins and the doubles point to earn the victory.
IUPUI took the early advantage with the doubles point to kick off the match. Blessing Benibo and Noah Viste represented the Jags in the number two singles spot and won 6-4. The partnership of Steven Paz and Luka Rodic sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 win in the number three spot. Emil Jankowski and Kamil Kozerski were notched at 3-3 when the Jags took the doubles point.
Holding the lead at 1-0, the Jags moved to singles play. Earned the first two singles points for the Jags were Rodic and Eli Mercer. Rodic took the number five singles match in two sets, 6-2, 6-1 while Mercer earned the number six singles point, 6-33, 6-2. After earning three points, IUPUI needed one more to seal the win. Paz earned the singles win in the number two spot, sealing the victory in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Kozerski then earned his first singles win of 2024 with a three set victory in the number one spot, 6-7, 7-6, 10-4.
Noah Viste played in the third spot falling, 7-5, 7-6. Nate Day rounded out the lineup in the four spot, where he fell in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.
The Jags are now 1-2 on the season and will host Toledo at West Indy tomorrow, January 21. The Rockets and Jags are set for a 6:30 PM first serve.
