Tennis Closes Weekend At Arizona Hidden Duals – University of Missouri Athletics

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Missouri tennis team completed competition at the Arizona Hidden Duals on Friday, Jan. 19, through Saturday, Jan. 20 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. The Tigers are still in search of their first win of the season (0-5), falling to Michigan State University, BYU and University of Arizona in the series.

Mizzou began the competition against Michigan State University, falling short to the Spartans 4-1. Senior Mae Canete secured the singles point in the No. 1 spot (6-3, 3-6, 2-6) in a hard-fought contest against Liisa Vehvilainen, taking the match to the third set. Junior Inah Canete and graduate student Emelie Schwarte saw three set action in the singles contest but fell short of pulling out with the win.

Extending the series with a full match against BYU spread across two days, the Tigers could not seize the win and fell to the Cougars 4-1. On day one of the match, the I. Canete and M. Canete doubles tandem grabbed a win against Emilee Astle and Jacque Dunyon (6-2). However, Mizzou could not extend the momentum from the first match to secure the doubles point. Continuing to day two of play, Graduate student Gabriela Martinez dominated to a singles point with a two-set battle against Jacque Dunyon, winning the first set in the tiebreak (7-6 (7), 6-0).

To finish the weekend’s series, the Tigers face off against Arizona, dropping to the Wildcats 4-0. The I. Canete and M. Canete duo picked up the win against Lauren Friedman and Brandelyn Fulgenzi (6-0), but Mizzou could not continue the streak to grab the doubles point.

HEAD COACH BIANCA TURATI

“We knew we were going to play against very competitive teams coming here to Tucson, and it got better match by match. We created opportunities in multiple singles matches throughout the weekend but came up a little short. The team needs to keep working at a high intensity and competing hard at practice. We have the next two weeks to do that and get ready for matches in Virginia. We are making progress.”
