No. 10 Aggies Pick Up a Pair of Wins


WACO, Texas – The No. 10 Texas A&M women’s tennis team picked up a pair of wins in what was supposed to be its home opener, topping Harvard, 6-1, before defeating  ACU, 7-0, at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.

Starting off the day, No. 3 Mary Stoiana/Mia Kupres dominated Holly Fischer/Stephanie Yakoff (6-2) to put the ball in A&M’s court. Harvard answered back with a win on court 3, knotting the teams with one court remaining. Nicole Khirin/Lucciana Perez rose to the occasion defeating Angel You/Iveta Daujotaite (6-4) and securing the first doubles point of the season.

In singles action, No. 26 Kupres made quick work of Charlotte Owensby on court 3 (6-2, 6-2). Immediately following, No. 1 Stoiana took down Stephanie Yakoff (6-0, 6-2), increasing the lead to three. No. 31 Khirin defeated No. 103 Holly Fischer (6-4, 6-4) to seal the deal for the Aggies. Continuing play, Daria Smetannikov defeated Maxi Duncan (6-2, 6-4) on court 5 and Perez triumphed over Sany Gawande on court 4 (7-6(5), 6-1). The Crimson escaped the sweep, claiming court 6.

Continuing domination into the next match, new duo Lizanne Boyer/Ellie Pittman claimed court 3 (6-1) while No. 3 Stoiana/Kupres did the same on court 1 (6-2), giving A&M the advantage.

The Maroon & White kept their foot on the pedal, making sure ACU didn’t win one set. No. 26 Kupres quickly doubled the lead on court 1 (6-1, 6-2). Following suit, Pittman claimed her first singles win on court 4 (6-0, 6-1) increasing the lead. Securing her first win and the match, Sydney Fitch took control of court 5 (6-1, 6-1). Shortly after, Boyer added a point on court 6 (6-3, 6-3). Jeanette Mireles picked up her first win of the day on court 3 (6-2, 6-3). Closing out the day, Perez secured the sweep on court 2 (7-5, 6-2).

The Aggies host the ITA Kickoff Weekend with Northwestern, Texas Christian, and Rice, Jan. 27-28 at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The Maroon & White will take on Northwestern at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
