Florida women’s tennis beats Baylor in home opener


GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – The UF women’s tennis team won their first victory of the 2024 spring season against Baylor. The Gators defeated the Bears 6-1, with a sweep in the double’s category, and five singles wins.

In doubles, UF secured the win with a fast 6-1 victory from Bente Spee and Alicia Dudeney. It was then followed by a 7-5 win from freshman’s Malwina Rowinska and Qavia Lopez. The Gators held a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.

In singles, the Gators won five of their six matches against Baylor. Alicia Dudeney beat Baylor’s Zuzanna Frankowska with a 6-2 final score. Rachel Gailis followed with a commanding performance over Isabella Harvison, 6-3, 6-1. Sara Dahlstrom then finished strong against Isabella Harvison. Dahlstrom took the first set 6-4, then closed out the second 6-3.

The final two singles matches were back-and-forth battles. Emily De Oliveira came back against Sierra Berry, taking the second set 6-4, and forcing a match tiebreaker. De Oliveira got the edge over Berry with a 10-6 final score to secure another point for Florida.

The final win for UF came from Qavia Lopez in another match tiebreaker against Zuzanna Kubacha. Lopez secured the first set 6-3. Then, Kubacha came back to win the second 7-6. Lopez pulled ahead to win the tiebreaker 10-6.

Carly Briggs fell to Baylor’s No. 2 Miska Kadleckova. After many hard sets, Briggs was able to win three games to put the final score at 6-0, 6-3.

Florida will take the courts again on Saturday, Jan. 27 when they host Florida International. Matchups begin at 11 a.m. ET.
