Hokies keep the momentum going against ETSU


Blacksburg, Va. – The Hokies start their season 2-0 after a 5-2 win over ETSU on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. 
 
A strong display in doubles and three straight-set wins helped to secure the win for Tech in their second match of the season.
 
In doubles, Charlotte Cartledge and Özlem Uslu started the Hokies off with a convincing 6-1 win on Court 3. Semra Aksu and Erika Cheng clinched the doubles point, winning their match 7-5 on Court 2. Katie Andreini and Dariya Radulova were back on Court 1, but play concluded before they could pick up their second win of the season.
 
Andreini gave the Hokies a strong start in singles, with a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set win on Court 2 over Fernanda Carvajal. On Court 4, Aksu battled through a first-set tiebreak, taking the tiebreak 7-5, and continued to win in straight sets with a 6-3 win in the second set over Jana Rovira. Radulova clinched the match for the Hokies with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alessandra Caceres on Court 5. 
 
Tamara Barad Itzhaki added the fifth team point in a tightly matched contest on Court 3 over Daniela Riveria. Barad Itzhaki took the first set 7-5 before dropping the second 4-6 to take the match to a 10-point tiebreak in the third set. She quickly regained her momentum, taking the tiebreak 10-point tiebreak, 10-6. 
 
Uslu fell in a third-set 10-point tiebreak to Sofia Markova after battling back in the second set.

The Hokies remain at home with a match against West Virginia on Sunday, January 28, at 1 p.m.
