NORMAN – The No. 13 Oklahoma women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 4 Michigan on Sunday afternoon inside Headington Family Tennis Center.

The Sooners (2-2) dropped their first doubles point of the season against the Wolverines (1-1). Michigan’s Lily Jones and Piper Charney set the tone early by taking court three, 6-2, over sophomore Romana Cisovska and freshman Roisin Gilheany. Oklahoma answered with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot from freshman Chloé Noël and sophomore Julia Garcia Ruiz against Reese Miller and Julia Fliegner. To secure the opening point for the Wolverines, No. 8 Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller knocked off OU’s No. 2 Alina Shcherbinina and Dana Guzman 7-5 at the top court.

Singles opened with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win on the top court from UM’s No. 10 Miller over No. 72 Shcherbinina. OU’s No. 112 Ava Catanzarite got the Sooners on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win at court six over No. 47 Jones to make the score 2-1. No. 37 Guzman followed it up by defeating Brown 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot to tie the match. Continuing the back-and-forth affair, UM’s No. 39 Fliegner took down OU’s No. 16 Florencia Urrutia on court two, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, before Garcia Ruiz responded with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot over Charney to keep the match alive for the Sooners.

In a final singles matchup on court four to determine a winner, the Wolverines clinched in a hard-fought battle. Michigan’s No. 94 Gala Mesochoritou pulled out a 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4) win over OU’s Noël to deliver the win for the visitor’s.

UP NEXT

The Sooners will be back on Saturday, Jan. 27 to face UCF at 10 a.m. CT at the Headington Family Tennis Center. OU will compete against California or Illinois on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
