The top-ranked UNC women’s tennis team had no trouble in tilts against No. 11 Auburn on Saturday and No. 3 Georgia on Sunday, defeating the Tigers 6-1 and the Bulldogs 7-0 to move to 4-0 on the young season.
On Saturday against Auburn, wins from the top-ranked pair of Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty and another win from Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran clinched the doubles point for Carolina.
Tran, Scotty and Brantmeier then all claimed wins in singles, with Brantmeier winning a 10-8 tiebreaker in her match. Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig each won in straight sets.
The next day against Georgia, the Brantmeier/Scotty pair won again in doubles, with Crawley and Tanguilig winning 6-2 in their match to once again give UNC the doubles point. In singles, the Tar Heels put on a dominant display, winning all six matches in straight sets. Tran was especially clinical after dropping her singles match against Auburn, defeating Georgia’s Mai Nirundorn 6-3, 6-1 on Court No. 6.
Carolina will be back in action in Chapel Hill when it hosts Oregon in the opening match of ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday at 2 p.m. The winner of that match will face the winner of Charlotte and Kentucky the next day at 3:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle on the weekend of February 9-12. Carolina is the four-time defending champion at the event.
