Ozark tennis coach found guilty of molesting student

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – A federal jury convicted a former Dale County tennis coach late Tuesday on charges he had sex with a minor girl 20 times, sometimes after they traveled out-of-state.

Prosecutors said that Leroy Thomas Joyner, Jr. committed those crimes during 2017 and 2018 when he provided tennis lessons and home-schooled children in Ozark, some to those he took to tennis tournaments in several states.

Court records show one of those students was a 15-year-old girl with whom Joyner, 51, engaged in various sexual encounters in Alabama and Georgia.

He shut down his business, Grassroots Tennis Association, following his 2018 arrest.

Court records did not immediately reveal Joyner’s sentencing date.

The U.S. Department of Justice does not provide booking photos.
