The Wichita State women’s tennis team will host their first home match of the 2024 season on Friday, January 26, when the Kansas State Wildcats come to Wichita Country Club for a 4:00 PM first serve.
SHOCKER NOTES
- The 2024 campaign for the Shockers will be their 15th under the guidance of Head Coach Colin Foster.
- The Shockers (2-1) enter the match after back-to-back 5-2 road wins at Creighton and Drake.
- WSU was a perfect 7-0 at home last season and have not lost at home since April 1, 2022 against Houston 2-5.
- The Shocker roster is made up of five returners and three international freshmen additions in Giorgia Roselli, Anne Knuettel, and Xin Tong Wang.
- The Shockers are coming off their first season with a winning record since 2018-19
- In the fall, freshman Wang advanced to the semifinals of both singles and doubles at the Fighting Illini open in Champaign, Illinois on Nov. 9
- In team action in the fall, Roselli and sophomore Kristina Kudryavtseva tied for the team lead in singles wins with five each.
- In doubles, the duo of Theodora Chantava and Clara Whitaker totaled the most doubles wins in the fall with four.
- Chantava leads the team in total wins so far this year with four.
SERIES HISTORY
- In the all-time series between the teams, K-State holds a narrow 30-28 lead.
- The teams have evenly split the last ten matches at five victories apiece.
- Wichita State won the last matchup between the teams on March 3, 2023, winning the match 4-3.
- In that match on March 3, the Shockers conceded the doubles point to the Wildcats, but recovered to win four of six singles matchups with Jessica Anzo at court three collecting the deciding point.
- This victory was the Shockers first win over K-State in Manhattan since April 5, 2012 where Wichita collected another 4-3 victory.
- Wichita State has not lost at home to K-State since February 23, 2013.
- This is the first matchup between the teams in Wichita since the 2018 season, where the Shockers won 4-1.
WILDCAT SCOUTING
- The Sooners are in their sixth year under Head Coach Jordan Smith
- Under Smith, the Wildcats are 41-60 overall and are 5-31 in Big XII play.
- Under Smith, the Wildcats are 5-6 against in-state opponents, with four of the wins coming against the Shockers.
- The Wildcats went 2-20 last season with wins over Florida Atlantic and Kansas City.
- Kansas State is looking for their first road victory in two seasons. Their last win outside of friendly confines was on March 2, 2022 in a 4-1 win over #68 Nebraska
- The Wildcats are 6-31 in road matches in the Smith era.
