The director of Road House has decided to boycott the upcoming film’s premiere.
Doug Liman’s decision came after Amazon MGM Studios cancelled the film’s theatrical distribution in favour of an exclusive premiere on Prime Video.
In an editorial for Deadline, the 58-year-old filmmaker discussed the decision’s long-term consequences, including the potential disappearance of movie theatres in the future.
“Movies like Road House, people actually want to see on the big screen, and it was made for the big screen,” he said.
“Without movie theatres,” he added, “we won’t have the commercial box office hits that are the locomotives that allow studios to take gambles on original movies and new directors.”
“Without movie theatres, there will be no movie stars. “Film executives are also at risk,” he stated.
The Edge of Tomorrow filmmaker also chastised the streaming platform for ongoing layoffs caused by a lack of money from the theatre industry’s falling business.
“And once the theaters go out of business, it could take decades for the business to recover, if ever,” he said.
The remake of the 1989 original picture, set to be released on March 21, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton, a former UFC fighter who now works as a bouncer.
The cast also includes Darren Barnet, Daniela Melchior, Arturo Castro, Jessica Williams, Billy Magnussen, J.D. Pardo, and Conor McGregor, the real-life UFC champion.
