Men’s Tennis Kicks off Spring Slate Saturday against Saint Francis at Central PA Tennis Center

Bucknell at a Glance

  • The Bison men’s tennis squad makes its 2024 spring debut on Saturday, hosting Saint Francis indoors at the Central PA Tennis Center.
  • Bucknell is coming off an outstanding fall tournament season. Over four events, the Bison combined for a 58-21 singles record and a 33-18 doubles mark.
  • Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega posted a team-high 10 singles wins against only three losses, while Amar Tahirovic, Tim Zelikovsky, and Liam Kilmer all went 9-1. Kilmer, a freshman, won his first eight career matches before dropping a three-setter to Virginia’s Stefan Regalia.
  • Tahirovic (13), Bain (12), and Brendan McDonald (10) all hit double figures in doubles wins. The duo of Bain and Tahirovic was a perfect 5-0.
  • Bucknell’s last competitive action came at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Lynchburg, Va., in October. Tahirovic, Bain, Zelikovsky, and Adam Stavrakas all advanced to the qualifying round, with Tahirovic winning a three-setter over Temple’s Erden Er in that draw.
  • Tahirovic/McDonald and Bain/Stavrakis made it all the way through to the main doubles draw at ITAs. Tahirivoc and McDonald won three matches in pre-qualifying and two more in the qualifying draw before being ousted by VCU. Meanwhile, Bain and Stavrakis won their first match in the Gold draw against Morgan State before being eliminated by a tandem from Old Dominion.

Saint Francis at a Glance/Series History

  • The Red Flash made their spring debut last Saturday at Navy, falling 5-2. Alan Gonzalez at No. 3 and Gregory Troyan at No. 6 posted singles wins, with Gonzalez’s coming in three sets.
  • Gonzalez leads the team with an 8-4 full-season record, followed by Tyler Nguyen and Patrick Reese at 6-4.
  • Saint Francis traveled to Lewisburg for the Bucknell Invitational to kick off the fall season. Bucknell went 7-0 against the Red Flash in head-to-head singles matches and 2-1 in doubles.
  • Bucknell is 16-4 all-time in dual matches against Saint Francis, including four straight wins.
  • The Bison won 6-1 last season at the Ebensburg Tennis Center. Bucknell won two of the three doubles matches to claim the point, and then captured the top five singles flights. Saint Francis’ lone point came via a three-set win from Patrick Reese at No. 6 singles.

Up Next

  • Bucknell returns to action on Feb. 3-4 at the four-team Binghamton Spring Invitational. The Bison will take on NJIT on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., and then play either Binghamton or Siena the following day.
  • The next home match will be against Mount St. Mary’s on Friday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m.
