NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women’s tennis team is slated to get underway on Friday when they host the Southern Jaguars. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Privateer Tennis Center. The Privateers then travel to Jackson State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The women’s team played in four fall tournaments and got a dose of some of their conference competition when they traveled to Nicholls twice. The Privateers also picked up wins in the ITA Southern Regional which was hosted by LSU.
Seven Privateers return off of last season’s team. Laurie Barendse is the leading returner in wins after she picked up 10 singles victories and went 5-2 against Southland competition in her freshman campaign.
Kateryna Kalistratova, who also is beginning her sophomore campaign, notched nine wins in singles and was off to a 5-1 start.
The Privateers have played Southern seven times since 2015 and have won every match against the Jaguars. Four of those seven victories have been sweeps. Last season, the Privateers got singles wins from Barendse, Kalistratova, Anastassia Kouchnareva and Raluca Puscas along with the doubles point in a 5-2 win.
New Orleans has also had success against Jackson State. The Privateers are 10-0 against the Tigers since 2013. Last season, the Privateers gutted out a 4-3 victory against Jackson State. Tristanne Dechoux scored the match clinching point against the Tigers.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Southern will be making their regular season debut on Friday. The Jaguars were 2-16 overall last year (2-7 in SWAC play). The Jaguars are also a young squad. They have nine total players and just one senior on the roster.
Jackson State will host Saint Louis before welcoming the Privateers on Sunday. The Tigers were 13-12 overall and 8-1 in conference play. They advanced to the SWAC Championship and fell on the short end of a 4-2 decision against Florida A&M.
