MINNEAPOLIS – On Friday, the University of Minnesota tennis program will host its second-straight double header of the 2024 spring season, matching up against North Dakota and Creighton. The Gophers will face North Dakota at 12:00 p.m. (CT) and then Creighton at 4:00 p.m. (CT) at Baseline Tennis Center.
Last Saturday, Minnesota hosted Marquette and Lindenwood, winning both matches 7-0 to open the year. The Gophers have a 2-0 record going into Friday’s matches.
The Competition
North Dakota is 1-3 on the year, with a 4-3 victory against Air Force last Friday being their lone win thus far.
The Gophers’ last dual match against North Dakota ended with a 7-0 Minnesota win on Feb. 4, 2022. The Maroon and Gold also faced North Dakota in the 2023 Gopher Invitational, going 4-1 in singles and 0-3 in doubles against the Fighting Hawks.
Last Saturday, in its 2024 season debut, Creighton fell 2-5 against Wichita State.
On Friday, Minnesota will face Creighton for the second time in program history. The Gophers last faced the Bluejays in a dual match on Jan. 28, 2012, claiming a 7-0 victory at home.
Match Format
Play will begin with three doubles matches, followed by six singles matches. Doubles will be played as one set to six, with the first team to earn two doubles wins earning one team point. Each singles match will be worth one team point.
Gopher Participants
Six University of Minnesota student-athletes are set to participate in both singles and doubles: sophomores Sofia Pizzoni, Aiva Schmitz, Sofia Pinto, and Anali Kocevar, and freshmen Emma Belluomini and Mia Liepert are all to play on Friday.
