OZARK, Ala. (WDHN) — A former tennis coach in Dale County has been found guilty of having sex with a teenage girl by a federal jury.
On Tuesday, Leroy Joyner Jr. was found guilty of one count of transporting a minor on interstate commerce with the intent that the minor engage in unlawful sexual activity.
According to federal prosecutors, from 2013 until his arrest in 2018, Joyner Jr. ran the Ozark-based Grass Roots Association, providing tennis lessons and homeschooling to kids and teens. He also took students to tennis tournaments in surrounding states.
Prosecutors say between 2017 and 2018, Joyner Jr. and one of his students, a 15-year-old girl from Ozark, had over 20 sexual encounters with each other in Alabama and Georgia.
Federal agents started investigating Joyner Jr. in January 2019. A sentencing date for Joyner Jr. has not been announced.
