NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s tennis team will participate this weekend in the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend Tournament as they visit Iowa State for a four-team regional.
ODU (0-1) will play the host Iowa State Cyclones (2-0) on Saturday at 3 p.m. EST. The other two teams in the regional are third-ranked Oklahoma State (2-0) and 12th-ranked UCLA (1-0) who will meet at noon on Saturday. Those winners will play on Sunday for a spot in the round of 16 starting February 9.
The Monarchs opened in Florida losing one match to Mother Nature with FAU and dropping a tough 4-3 decision to Florida State. ODU won the doubles point and made a rally in singles with three-set wins by Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Sofia Johnson.
Iowa State (2-0) defeated South Dakota and Missouri State to begin its season last weekend. UCLA (1-0) started its season with a 5-2 win over #6-Texas on January 19. Oklahoma State (2-0) defeated Michigan (4-2) and Ohio State (4-1) to start its season.
This is the third meeting all-time between ODU and Iowa State with each team winning once. Iowa State took the meeting last year 4-1 in Norfolk. Meetings with either UCLA or Oklahoma State will be the first-ever between the schools.
“We learned a lot in our last match and we are eager to compete again. Being in position to compete against the best players and coaches in the nation at a national tournament is a privilege,” said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
