No. 17 Wake Forest Poised for ITA Kickoff Weekend – Wake Forest University Athletics


WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With a berth to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Team Indoor Championships on the line, the 17th-ranked Wake Forest men’s tennis team will travel to Chapel Hill to compete in the North Carolina Regional as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend Saturday and Sunday.
 
The Demon Deacons will square off with No. 20 Florida on Saturday, with the winner moving on to face the winner of No. 16 North Carolina/Illinois in the championship match on Sunday. The losers of both semifinals will face each other in a consolation match.
 
First serve between No. 17 Wake Forest and No. 20 Florida is slated for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

    • 9:30 a.m. – No. 17 Wake Forest vs. No. 20 Florida
    • 12:30 p.m. – No. 16 North Carolina vs. Illinois
  • Sunday, Jan. 28
    • 11 a.m. – Consolation Match
    • 2 p.m. – Championship Match

Last Time Out (Kickoff Weekend 2023)
Wake Forest earned its second-consecutive trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships a season ago, after winning the Wake Forest Regional.
 
The Demon Deacons swept then-No. 23 Auburn, before winning a thriller over Middle Tennessee in the final, 4-2, the following day.
 
Of note, Wake Forest won the 2018 ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

In the latest ITA Rankings, Wake Forest was ranked 17th nationally. The Demon Deacons have three singles players and one doubles pair currently ranked.

Roster Outlook
The Deacs are returning seven players from a season ago, including three players (No. 7 Filippo Moroni, Luciano Tacchi and Matthew Thomson) that appeared in 25 or more matches. Additionally, the Deacs welcome nine newcomers to the squad, including No. 54 DK Suresh Ekambaram and No. 78 Franco Capalbo.
 
The Matchup – No. 20 Florida
No. 20 Florida is off to a 3-0 start to the 2024 campaign and coming off a 5-2 victory over SMU on Sunday (Jan. 21). The Gators currently have four singles players and two doubles pairs ranked.

Saturday will mark the 22nd all-time meeting between the Demon Deacons and the Gators as the Deacs currently own a 6-15 ledger against Florida. A win Saturday will mark the Demon Deacons’ first win over the Gators since 2001.
 
Next Up
After ITA Kickoff Weekend, the Demon Deacons will return home on Feb. 2 to host UNC Greensboro and No. 11 Columbia for a double-header inside the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
