Tigers compete well in Frisco tennis meet

FRISCO, Texas — Texas High’s varsity tennis team opened the spring season Friday in Frisco.

The Tigers competed well against some strong competition from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, according to Texas High coach Toby Watson.

“We were able to beat the rain for the most part and get most of the tournament in,” Watson said. “It was a great start for the team in a tough field of players.”

Zain Suelzer and Bramlett Baird both won matches in the consolation draw in boys singles. Suelzer was still playing in the semifinals before the match was called because of rain.

Abigail Thomson won two rounds in the main draw before losing a tough three-setter in the quarterfinals of girls singles. Gabby Cowan played solid but lost both rounds of her singles matches, Watson said.

Carter Shuffield/Adam McCarter and Ben Soyars/Alan Miller both won matches before losing in the consolation semifinals in boys doubles.

Grace Wilson/Elle Floyd won in the first round of the main draw then lost a three-set match in the round of 16 in girls doubles. Hayden Henry/Brooklyn Ballard won two matches before their match was called because of rain in girls doubles consolation finals.

Ricky Luna/Charlotte Shelton reached the round of 16 in mixed doubles. Max Currie/Rebecca Coleman won the consolation final in mixed doubles.
