Does Qinwen Zheng Know How to Rap? Exploring the Chinese Tennis Queen’s Hidden Skill

With her sheer brilliance on the court, Qinwen Zheng is taking the tennis world by storm. The young Chinese tennis star is now one victory away from the Australian Open title after outclassing some of the big names on the women’s circuit. Like her idol, Li Na did 10 seasons ago at the 2014 Australian Open, the 21-year-old now also has the opportunity to lift the women’s singles trophy in Melbourne. And if she manages to prevail in the championship match, Zheng has every chance of turning the post-victory presentation into karaoke night, as her latent talent for singing has not been kept hidden from the public lens.

Qinwen Zheng’s skills extend beyond the racket game

Back in 2023, the Chinese tennis star brushed aside the likes of Maria Sakkari and Jasmine Paolini to reach the finals of the Zhengzhou Open. In the championship match, Qinwen Zheng later defeated the 7th-seeded Barbora Krejčíková to lift the trophy on her home soil. After delivering a post-victory speech, the 21-year-old player also brought to light her singing talent by belting out a Chinese tune for the crowd.

Following her remarkable triumph,  Zheng also disclosed that she likes to sing both slower songs and Chinese rap. As reported by Nine, the WTA player said, “Mostly I sing Chinese songs, slower songs. I also do some Chinese rap. I maybe only sing three or four English songs. For the most part, it’s Chinese.”

Just like she did at the Zhengzhou Open, Zheng can once again serenade the crowd at the Australian Open if she prevails in the title match. However, it won’t be an easy task for the young WTA sensation, as a formidable opponent now awaits her in the championship game.

Zheng will now face the defending champion at the Rod Laver Arena

The 21-year-old overcame the likes of  Océane Dodin, Wang Yafan, and Katie Boulter to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam event in Melbourne. Zheng later pulled off a comeback after dropping the first set against her unseeded Russian opponent, Anna Kalinskaya, and she won the match with a score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-1. In the semifinals, the Chinese player thumped  Dayana Yastremska in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, as she has now reached the finals of the Australian Open.
