NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men’s tennis team will wrap up what was slated to be a busy week on Sunday when they head to Jackson State to face the Tigers on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The men’s team had three matches scheduled this week. Their bout against LSU wound up being moved indoors on Wednesday due to inclement weather. The match against Southern which was supposed to be the home opener was postponed on Friday with a makeup date still to be determined.
The men’s team will join the women who will also be playing in Jackson on Sunday.
New Orleans (0-1) competed well in several spots, especially in doubles against a difficult opponent. Their regular season opener was a loss to LSU.
Luke Joujan and Uwe Diehl were a game away from taking their match in doubles. Marcel Volz and Marc Mail were on serve with LSU’s top pair until a late service break in game eight helped the Tigers seal the doubles point.
In singles, Volz played two tiebreak sets against LSU’s number on singles player, Stefan Latinovic. Volz also rallied from 5-0 down in the second set to force a tiebreak but Latinovic came out ahead in both races to seven points.
The Privateers have played the Tigers 11 times since 2013 and have won all meetings. New Orleans swept last year’s meeting against Jackson State 7-0.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Jackson State has played one match this spring, a 4-0 loss against Ole Miss. Carlos Castillo and Federick Pickenstainer were in a tight battle at flight three in doubles when the doubles point was decided.
The Tigers were 9-11 overall last season and 4-1 in SWAC play. They advanced to the championship match where they were defeated by #1 seed Alabama State.
